How to Submit a Letter to the Editor

To submit a letter referring to a recent Journal article: click here.

To submit a letter that is not about a Journal article: please go to our Author Center log in page, which will give you access to our new submission system.

If you have submitted a manuscript in the past two years or reviewed for us since 2002, an account has already been set up for you. Simply go to our Author Center home page and type your e-mail address into the "Forgot my Password" box and a password will be e-mailed to you. Otherwise, please register to create an account. Once logged in to Manuscript Central, choose "For Authors," then "Submit a Manuscript," article type "Letter to Editor."

Letters to the Editor are considered for publication (subject to editing and abridgment) provided they do not contain material that has been submitted or published elsewhere.

  • The text, not including references, must not exceed 175 words if it is in reference to a recent Journal article, or 400 words in all other cases.

  • A letter must have no more than five references and one figure or table.

  • It must not be signed by more than three authors.

  • Letters referring to a recent Journal article must be received within three weeks after its publication. Articles are posted on the Web on the Wednesday before the publication date and remain for three weeks. Letters are due on Wednesdays before 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

  • You will be asked to include your full address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Financial associations or other possible conflicts of interest must be disclosed. Fields marked with an asterisk * or req are required and must be entered.

  • You will receive an e-mailed acknowledgment of your submission. Please do not submit duplicate copies by mail or fax.
